Using Enneagram for a more profitable and safer Mining Operation

As part of its permanent contribution to the optimization of global mining, the Chamber of Mines of Peru promotes the dissemination and application of new techniques aimed at the integral analysis of workers and treating those behaviors that can put at risk the wellbeing of the mining business. For this reason, the Chamber of Mines of Peru will hold a conference on the use and application of the «Enneagram and Transactional Analysis to Overcome Negative Emotions in the Mining Sector.»

Dr. Carlos Castagnola Sánchez, Senior Management Advisor of the Chamber of Mines of Peru will be in charge of this outstanding presentation. This presentation will be part of the First Seminar «Effective Strategies to Achieve Success in the Mining Sector», to be held on June 24 and 25 at the Raúl Porras Barrenechea Hall of the Peruvian Congress.

The use of the Enneagram helps each individual to know, recognize, value and accept himself. In addition, it is based on the principle that a worker who loves and respects himself will also love and respect others. Transactional analysis, on the other hand, is based on a psychological position, according to which human beings are marked by their relationships with others, in the case of work environment, by the interaction with their coworkers, superiors, etc. According to this analysis, there are three states in the human consciousness, the psychological father, which refers to the levels of restriction; the psychological child, which is a state of total freedom; and the psychological adult, whose main characteristic is reflection and self-control.

Dr. Carlos Castagnola’s Opinion on Methods of Analysis for Emotional Stability

«It is important to have control over emotions. Within mining organizations, we often find employees who allow their irrational side to control them. For example, we will find workers who by nature and according to their accumulated experiences have natural rebelliousness against authority and rules. This is because they have not developed the state of psychological adult and live in a state of poorly managed freedom (psychological child), which can end up increasing the chances of accidents in the development of mining operations, putting at risk not only their integrity, but that of their colleagues. That is why nowadays the enneagram and other methods are used», said Dr. Carlos Castagnola Sánchez, Director of Senior Management of the Chamber of Mines of Peru.

It is also important to pay attention to the interpersonal relationships of the workers in order to maintain a balanced work environment, in which they work evenly to obtain the general results of the company. The problem arises when bad relations of workers or supervisors from different areas become the cause of problems. That is why Castagnola emphasizes, «both the use of the enneagram and transactional analysis are relevant.”

Factors Influencing the Development of Mining Operations

«The aim of most mining operations is to perform the work to obtain the maximum level of profitability with high safety standards. However, in many cases, a confrontation or clash of positions between those responsible for production and safety occurs. This occurs when both professionals, instead of reaching an agreement, try to impose their authority over the other’s, which ends up affecting the level of safety and profitability of the mining operation», said Ing. César Gallardo Vela, Executive CEO of the Chamber of Mines of Peru.

The safety manager will prioritize the integrity of the personnel, limiting those who do not have the necessary personal protection elements and measures. On the other hand, for the production manager, the priority will be to extract as much ore as possible to meet the established objectives.

Since this dispute is quite common, it is essential to use mechanisms and tools to improve relations between the people in charge of the different areas, as well as, to be able to continue with the productive process with the least possible number of accidents, since this also represents a loss for the company. Therefore, it is taken into account that a disabling accident can represent an expense of tens of thousands of dollars and a fatality can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Finally, knowledge of the positive and negative aspects of the workers is a vitally important step, which will ensure the continuity of the production chain with the least number of accidents.
