National University of Callao signs an agreement with The Chamber of Mines of Peru

Through its constant efforts to provide mining training, The Chamber of Mines of Peru signed a framework agreement last Monday with the National University of Callao (UNAC). The signatories of the agreement were César Gallardo Vela, President of The Chamber of Mines of Peru, and Ms. C. María Valderrama Rojas, Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (FIARN-UNAC).

Under the agreement, it is established the framework for the relationship between The Chamber of Mines of Peru and the National University of Callao. The agreement states that both institutions may organize activities, provide assistance to one another, and share training in areas of mutual competence.

In the meeting, both the President of The Chamber of Mines and the leading authority of FIARN-UNAC addressed issues relating to the work of both institutions. They both discussed how the strategy objective from The Chamber of Mines of Peru agree with the training given by the National University of Callao.

Psychological and Personal Skills Training

One issue in common is the psychological and personal skills training that mining and engineering undergraduates receive.

Gallardo said, “Last year, we organized an event titled Effective ‘Strategies for Success’ held at the Congress. Most Universities do not address important issues such as transactional analysis, ontological coaching and how to lead work teams with some psychological basis.”

The Dean of the National University of Callao agreed with Gallardo. María Valderrama expressed, “Now, psychological issues are important. Sometimes students lack in some skills other than training and we have to deal with that. Training is seen from the technical side only, in other words, manufacturing, but for students to acquire managerial skills, they need to be prepared. Management is not an innate ability.”

Gallardo concurred with Valderrama. “Courses such as leadership should be part of the curriculum. Those will make us successful.”

The Dean said the National University of Callao have some schools that share the objectives with The Chamber of Mines of Peru such as the School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Electrical Engineering.
