Self-Esteem in Mining as a Factor to Achieve Success

The presentation will take place on June 24 and 25 at the Raúl Porras Barrenechea Hall of the Congress of the Republic of Peru.

Self-Esteem in Mining as a Factor to Achieve Success

The most valuable asset for any organization, whether it is a small business or a large multinational, is human resource since workers, through their performance, are responsible for the proper functioning of the company in which they work. Therefore, employees with excellent levels of self-esteem and absolute confidence in their abilities are crucial in mining companies.

Importance of Self-Esteem in Mining

For the Chamber of Mines of Peru, it is important to promote the dissemination of these new concepts in order to train professionals with a higher level of confidence in their abilities. This will have a positive effect on the entire extractive operation.

For this reason, our institution will conduct the conference “Development of Self-Esteem and Self-Concept to Achieve Success in Mining”. Norma Córdoba Bazo, experienced Psychotherapist and Training Advisor of the Chamber of Mines of Peru, will be in charge of this outstanding presentation. In addition, it will be part of the First Seminar “Effective Strategies to Achieve Success in the Mining Sector”, to be held on June 24 and 25 at the Raul Porras Barrenechea Hall of the Congress of the Republic of Peru.

“It is important to boost workers’ self-esteem, as this helps them to have greater confidence in their abilities. When this happens, personnel do not shy away from complex tasks; on the contrary, they see them as a challenge to be overcome and as an opportunity to prove their worth in their workplace.”

In addition, “This high level of self-esteem increases workers’ performance and develops other beneficial skills such as better interpersonal communication and optimal stress management. It also generates a quick adaptation to change processes or moments of uncertainty”, said Mg. Norma Córdoba Bazo regarding the role of self-esteem in mining.

Self-Concept Development

On the other hand, the development of self-concept plays an important role in professional growth. It helps employees to value themselves, to recognize the qualities they possess and to be aware of their limitations. The development of self-concept must be done in a sensible and self-critical way. This will serve as a basis for recognizing both the positive and negative aspects of each worker, that is, behaviors, attitudes and aptitudes that contribute to a real evaluation of each of the organization’s employees.

In the mining industry, a management model based on the generation of changes in behaviors and habits of workers must be implemented. Consequently, tools and foundations necessary for the achievement of personal integration are being implemented based on the increase of self-esteem, which cause positive effects such as self-care and self-motivation of workers involved in mining activities.

Factors Affecting Workers’ Self-Esteem in Mining

Companies should develop a policy more interested in knowing the collective and individual needs of workers. In this regard, it is more complicated to identify psychosocial problems, which are caused by aspects such as a high work pace, the assignment of repetitive and monotonous tasks, as well as the shift system that ends up harming personal life.

The presence of employees with low self-esteem is reflected in the increase in absenteeism, as well as in the signs of stress and anxiety they show in completing their assigned tasks, which leads to a lack of concentration and becomes the main cause of accidents.

To illustrate the problem of self-esteem in mining, we can mention what happened a few years ago at a mine in the interior of Peru, where a worker, as a result of his malpractice in scaling rocks, ended up with an exposed fracture of the tibia and fibula.

Once the investigations were carried out, it was proven that the origin of this failure was lack of concentration and anxiety of the worker. He was going through an instability period in his sentimental relationship, which caused him not to be focused on the work or his safety while working.

In this case, the techniques promoted by the Chamber of Mines of Peru aim to foster self-esteem, focusing on promoting balance in the inner world of the miners.

Therefore, it is necessary to analyze and anticipate all the emotional situations that workers may go through, especially the negative ones (worries or frustrations) in order to establish mechanisms that help to maintain high levels of attention during mining works.
