Risk Prevention and Safety promoted by our Institution

The Chamber of Mines of Peru intensifies training of mining workers in safety issues.

Prevención de riesgos y seguridad son impulsadas por nuestra institución

The Chamber of Mines of Peru continues to promote and recognize good practices in safety and risk prevention. Especially those carried out by professionals, technicians and operating personnel of the various mining projects in Peru and Latin America.

For this reason, it has rewarded the constant commitment to conducts and safe work procedures demonstrated by Elvis Trello Bartra; electromechanical technician working at the Cerro Verde mining project, located in the city of Arequipa, Peru.

He was rewarded with a diploma course on Mining Safety Management, so that he can continue with his training process and thus continue collaborating in the prevention and reduction of accidents at his work center.

Inevitably, mining is a productive activity that, due to the extreme geographical and climatic characteristics in which it is usually carried out, presents a series of risks to workers. Therefore, one of the main concerns of mining companies is the optimization of methods and strategies to reduce dangerous situations.

To achieve this, it is necessary for companies to have personnel with a high level of awareness of risk prevention and safety, above all, of the importance of putting into practice positive behaviors to prevent or reduce the number of accidents, thus physical integrity of the workers is preserved.

In addition, this ensures that at the end of the workday, each of those who are part of a mining project can return home uninjured.

Mutual work in risk prevention is fundamental in mining safety

In this regard, for the worker Elvis Trello Bartra, one of the fundamental aspects to prevent and reduce the number of accidents in mining operations is the mutual care among workers, since this helps to preserve physical integrity of all those who are part of the extractive projects.

“Companionship makes us form quite close and united work teams, whose fundamental concern is the physical integrity of oneself and that of one’s partner. This helps reduce the number of injuries to various parts of the body,” says Trello. “For example, to the hands, which serve multiple functions and are useful in performing complex activities in the workplace; as well as other simpler tasks in everyday life, such as caressing and giving a big hug to our families.”

The correct use of PPE is one of the most effective ways in safety and risk prevention for hands and other parts of the body.

“It is the responsibility of the workers to request the respective PPE. The managers have the obligation to provide these implements free of charge and in good condition,” says Elvis Trello.

It should be pointed out that each PPE is designed to fulfill a specific function and to protect the integrity of a specific part of the body. Thus, the include goggles, ear protectors, gloves, safety boots, helmets, etc.

Chamber of Mines of Peru: Safety comes first

On the other hand, Elvis Trello acknowledged that the Chamber of Mines of Peru is one of the few institutions that give the utmost importance to risk prevention and safety.

“It is important that they constantly develop and update the contents on mining safety, because there are many workers who have not received adequate training, and they work without knowledge of the proper procedures to carry out the operations. This is largely due to the fact that there are not too many training centers that offer such a detailed analysis of the problems and risks to the health of mine workers. For that reason, I consider the contribution of the Chamber of Mines of Peru to be unique and very good”.

International Certification

Among the aspects that make the proposal of the Chamber of Mines of Peru different is the possibility to validate their studies in more than 100 countries.

“This is important because it shows that safety optimization is not only important in Peru, but also in other parts of the world. Therefore, the studies carried out can be validated in other countries, and the knowledge acquired makes it possible for workers to aspire to jobs in different parts of the world”.

Finally, he referred to the importance to him of having being able to take part in the safety and risk prevention training programs of the Chamber of Mines of Peru. He also recognized the benefits it will bring to his professional development.

“This diploma course on Mining Safety Management, offered to me by the Chamber of Mines of Peru, gives me the opportunity to continue training and gain a little more experience in terms of safety in the extractive task. I am grateful to the Chamber of Mines of Peru for this opportunity, and I invite my colleagues who are involved in the development of electromechanical tasks, work in concentrator plants and other areas, to continue their training, because if you do not keep up to date, you will be left behind”, he concluded.
