The President of the Republic, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK), met with mining leaders in Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios). After announcing a commission to find solutions to the mining problem in said region.

Statements and announcement by President Kuczynski regarding the commission

“We have come start the dialog, we have not brought solutions or problems. We have come to listen and then we will form a working group with the relevant ministers and representatives of Madre de Dios. This is to see how we solve these issues”, explained PPK at the meeting.

Likewise, Kuczynski was accompanied by the ministers of Energy and Mines, Environment, Health, and Social Inclusion. In addition, 15 mining representatives and the regional governor of Madre de Dios, Luis Otsuka, attended the meeting. Mr. Otsuka stated that in the government of Ollanta Humala 150 million soles were destined for actions against illegal mining. However, in recent years, instead of decreasing this activity, it has increased.

In addition, the regional governor of Madre de Dios commented to President Kuczynski, the proposal to repeal legislative decrees 1100 and 1105. Which were implemented in the previous government, to prohibit the use of dredgers in small mining and establish differences between informal activity and illegal.

“This is not a moment of communication; it is a moment of diagnosis. This is not the time to give an opinion,” said the Minister of Energy and Mines, Gonzalo Tamayo. When referring to Otsuka’s request to repeal legislative decrees against informal and illegal mining.

Deadline for mining optimization in the region

The President of the Republic has decided to give his ministers and congressmen from the eastern macro-region one month as a deadline to make recommendations to make mining activity viable which generates a good part of the economy in that area. This is to observe all possible scenarios and optimally ensure the well-being of the region.
