One delegation of The Chamber of Mines of Peru attended the presentation of the book «Gemas del Perú Antiguo y Moderno» (Jewels of Ancient and Modern Peru), in 2017 Lima International Book Fair (FIL).
Mining in Peru is not only about extraction of minerals such as gold, silver and copper. Its nature and history also offer valuable resources like jewels that were used in Peru since pre-Inca times.
Due to this reality, a mining expert, geologist and researcher decided to conduct his own research on the jewels of Peru.
Jaroslav Hyršl, from Czech Republic, has been studying for twenty years the jewels and precious stones used in different pieces of jewelry, which were discovered in archeological findings of ancient Peru.
As a result of this work along with the support of the National University of Engineering (UNI) and the Andres del Castillo Museum, Hyršl presented his book «Gemas del Perú Antiguo y Moderno » (Jewels of Ancient and Modern Peru). The event took place in Clorinda Matto de Turner auditorium last August 1; as part of the activities for the 22nd Edition of Lima International Book Fair.
The head table was formed by the book author; the representative of UNI, Alvaro Montaño; and the president of the Andres Castillo Museum, Guido del Castillo.
Likewise, both the author and UNI representative emphasized the importance of presenting a unique publication in the country. It details the variety of jewels and how ancient Peruvians used them in different religious jewels of their cultures.
The Chamber of Mines and mining culture promotion
The Chamber of Mines of Peru also participated in the presentation of Mr. Hyršl’s valuable work, as part of its commitment with the recognition of our cultural and mining wealth.
The event had the presence of the engineer César Gallardo, president of the Chamber of Mines of Peru. He recognized the great contribution that this study offers to the specialists in mineralogy.
The engineer Gallardo agreed on the need to support artisanal mining. This sector is responsible for the exploitation and commercialization of these jewels, which are valuable pieces and are used in national and international gold craftwork.
The Chamber of Mines of Peru reassures through this kind of participation its commitment with the preservation of the cultural legacy of the civilizations in our country, especially regarding mining activities.
Likewise, it stands out the contribution of works such as the one from Jaroslav Hyršl to the past and present study of our cultural and mining knowledge, this sets the basis for a greater value of the mining as an activity with historical nature.
