The Congressman Luis Galarreta, from Fuerza Popular (Popular Force) party, was chosen president of the Congress of the Republic for the legislative period 2017-2018 for 84 votes in his favor. He will replace his party colleague Luz Salgado.

Likewise, Luis Galarreta, Fujimori’s supporter, who led the list No. 1, will share the Congress Board of Directors along with Mario Mantilla (Popular Force), Richard Acuña (Alliance for Progress) and Mauricio Mulder (American Popular Revolutionary Alliance, APRA) in the first, second and third vice-presidency, respectively.

He also said, during his first speech as legislator, that every party will decide over every issue presented as a legislative proposal by the Executive Branch, but the Congress Board of Directors will facilitate that the national representation has the proposals in the corresponding deadlines.

Dr. Carlos Castagnola, Secretary General of the Advisory Council of The Chamber of Mines of Peru, also attended this ceremony.

Likewise, The Chamber of Mines of Peru, that keeps a framework agreement with the Congress of the Republic of Peru, congratulated the new President for the different work groups, especially to the legislators María Melgarejo, president of the Culture Committee and Miguel Román, president of the Energy and Mines Committee.

Profile of the president of the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Luis Galarreta

He studied Law and Political Science in San Martin de Porres University (1990-1997) where he received the Bachelor’s Degree. He has a specialization in Banking and Insurance in the Higher-Education Institution San Ignacio de Loyola (1993-1995).

Luis Galarreta entered the political scene in 1989 with Movimiento Libertad (Liberty Movement), he was chosen as National Secretary of University graduates of Liberty in 1991. Likewise, he was assigned as legal representative of Renovación Nacional (National Renewal) party in 1998. Then in 2003 he was elected councilman in the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima for National Unity Alliance from 2003 to 2006.

In the elections of 2006, he was elected Congressman with the Electoral National Unity Alliance party to represent Metropolitan Lima for the period 2006-2011. Moreover, in the general elections of 2011 he was reelected with Alianza por el Gran Cambio (Alliance for the Great Change) for the period 2011-2016.

He joined the National Renewal party in 2005 and resigned in 2009. Likewise, he joined Christian People’s Party in 2010 and resigned in 2015.

In the general elections of 2016, as invited member of Popular Force party, he was reelected for a new period in Congress with this political party.
