Mr. Luis Iberico will address mining in the new century at Geomet 2016

The president of the Advisory Council of the Chamber of Mines of Peru, Mr. Luis Iberico Nuñez, assured that the next GEOMET International Mining Congress 2016 “will address the role of all actors involved in mining activities in the country.”

“It is the right time to discuss these issues because we are starting a new government and it is the perfect opportunity to put on the table all the challenges ahead of us, also considering that Peru is a mining country par excellence,” said the also former president of the Congress of the Republic (2015-2016).

Dr. Luis Iberico’s opinion on mining today

Mr. Luis Iberico indicated that mining will address a fundamental role not only in macroeconomy of Peru, but also at local and regional level. For this reason, the State must define the role it should assume. “Mining in our country impacts social life of entire districts and provinces. That is why it must be developed with the highest standards of social responsibility and with an honest approach with communities. For this it is essential that the State is fully involved in the issue,” he said.

Iberico added that Peru has to be at the forefront in terms of scientific and technological development in mining operations. “It has already been said by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski during his recent trip to China. Peru has to go from being a mere extractor of minerals to become an industry that transforms and gives added value. That is the future of our country”, he said.

In addition, he considered that in the GEOMET International Congress 2016, to be held between October 11 and 14 at Grand Theater of the National Engineering University (UNI), “these fundamental issues in mining will be address,” Mr. Luis Iberico mentioned.

“It is an extraordinary opportunity for students, professionals, mining company owners, government officials, everyone in general, to continue training because the mining industry changes day by day and we must be up to date”, he said.

Admission of outstanding professionals to the Advisory Council of the Chamber of Mines of Peru

At the same time, he highlighted the admission of two experts in Mining Environmental Law and international consultancies as members of the Advisory Council of the Chamber of Mines of Peru. “With the admission of Mrs. Xennia Forno Castro-Pozo and the engineer Luis Alva Florian, we continue to integrate more personalities to the Chamber. This, with the objective of promoting clean, responsible and global mining,” he stressed.

“We are giving a great boost to the Chamber and we have already positioned ourselves as a valid interlocutor for mining and development issues. We continue to grow at an important time. With the entry of a new government and when Ombudsman’s Office has reported 96 social conflicts related to mining. This is the big problem that the Chamber of Mines of Peru together with the communities, the State and the mining companies will help to unblock “, he concluded.
