The Director of Geology from the Chamber of Mines of Peru proposes the update of the geological maps, which are important to mining development and mineral exploration.
2018 will be a challenging year and some vital changes should be done in mining. The purpose of The Chamber of Mines of Peru, an independent and scientific institution, is to continue sharing ideas, experiences and knowledge from experts.
It should be noted that this institution groups together companies, natural or legal person, and universities that have a relationship with mining.
Regarding the challenges in 2018, Dr. Churchill Vela, Director of Geology from the Chamber of Mines of Peru, says the Peruvian Geological Institute is currently publishing outdated documents and geological maps, many of which were prepared around the sixties and the seventies.
Update of Geological Maps
Dr. Vela says, “The update of geological maps is vital for mineral exploration, as well as for infrastructure projects in progress.” Vela holds a PhD degree in Tectonophysics from the University of Montpellier (France). He is a member of the Board of the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET). He also worked as Supervisor for companies such as Caraveli, Huallanca, Buenaventura, Yauliyacu and Aurex gold mining company.
Vela feels it is important to find “solutions to social conflicts together with the rural community”. He added, “Royalties are not well distributed, and so the community, owner of the land, does not take advantage of them. Those communities should receive the profits gained by companies. That is a solution.”
“If communities could be part of the business deals over the mineral deposits, which are now the main source of social conflicts, or if royalties were distributed to communities, we could count on them as strategic partners and projects could be feasible,” concluded Vela.
The Director of Geology from The Chamber of Mines of Peru proposes the update of geological maps and is optimistic about the institution. Vela expressed, “This is a leading institution in research and training in different fields.”
