The international delegation of the Chamber of Mines of Peru had an intense week of learning and academic training in the most important mining countries in the world: Canada.

First, the member of the delegation attended the PDAC 2020, an event that brought together more than 25 thousand people, including investors, political authorities, managers and experts linked to the mining sector.

There, our professionals from different countries such as Peru, Mexico, Bolivia and Ecuador, learned about the processes and solutions of global trend; and also trained in the technological and academic projections that are currently transforming the industry.

Queen’s University and University of Toronto welcomed our Delegation

After closing the PDAC 2020, the international delegation of the Chamber of Mines of Peru continued with its learning route in Canada. Thus, the entire delegation arrived at two of the most important universities not only in Canada, but also in the world. That is, the University of Toronto and Queen’s University.

University of Toronto and The Chamber of Mine of Peru

On Thursday, March 5, the Chamber of Mines of Peru’s delegation arrived at the University of Toronto, a prestigious institution with the largest number of Nobel Prize winners among its graduates.

There, they were welcomed by Ph.D. Rachel Wallace, Associate Director, Strategy & Development of Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering, who escorted the delegation across the campus and the university’s faculties. She also presented the institution’s latest scientific advances in the field of mining, displaying an impressive laboratory where chemical analysis and tests of minerals, metals and rocks are performed.

In this laboratory, the expert answered the doubts of the professionals and senior officials who were part of the delegation of the Chamber of Mines of Peru. Different topics related to mining, geology and metallurgy were discussed, including issues such as chemical analysis of solid samples, speciation by oxidation state, sequential extraction and fire test for the determination of gold, silver and platinides.

Rachel Wallace, Ph.D., explained that more than 2 million dollars have been invested in this laboratory alone and that it is supported by the Canadian government and some private institutions.

Delegation of the Chamber of Mines of Peru at Queen’s University

On Friday, March 6, a guided visit was made to the renowned Queen’s University, considered the most important Canadian university in the area of scientific research. Historically, Queen’s stands out as an institution with an art center that has more than 17,000 works of art, including several paintings by Rembrandt, Gustav Klimt and Pablo Picasso.

The international delegation of the Chamber of Mines of Peru was welcomed by Ph.D. Julian M. Ortiz, Professor of the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering, who guided them through the facilities.

Then, the professionals of the Chamber of Mines of Peru were guided by Ph.D. Amah Gareman, Director of The Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining at Queen’s University. He was asked many technical questions related to formation, chemistry, morphology and classification of soils. He also explained the geological and engineering principles in the behavior of soils, rocks and groundwater.

Finally, the delegation was welcomed by the scientist Oscar Rielo, Professor of Rock Mechanics Lab at Queen’s Engineering, who presented his latest research and scientific advances in mining. Oscar Rielo clarified the doubts of the professional members of the Chamber of Mines of Peru’s delegation on specialized drilling and blasting techniques the clarified.

The visits to these two universities were part of the Mintur Canada 2020 academic program, which was developed by the Chamber of Mines of Peru.
