To Luis Alva, Director of Projects and Consultancy from The Chamber of Mines of Peru, 2018 is a favorable year for Peruvian mining. According to Alva, “There is greater request of experts in the industry, particularly in safety, environmental management, and mining operations.”
Alva believes that mining safety must be addressed from the viewpoint of individuals. Luis Alva said, “Safety must be based on behavior, worker’s performance and rational use of mineral resources.”
“Regulations are modified with greater frequency. However, the objectives are not achieved; thus, the solution is to change and improve people’s behavior towards the mining activity,” stated Alva.
Education and Opinion of Engineer Luis Alva, Director of Projects and Consultancy
Luis Alva Florian graduated from the National University of Engineering (UNI) and holds a master’s degree in Mining Management from said University. He holds the position of General
Manager of the Mining Company of San Ignacio de Morococha S.A.A.
According to Alva, there must be a closer relationship between mining and society. He stated, “I believe it is time to address society, invite people to participate, thereby they will realize this is an industry environmentally committed.”
“Not only miners should be invited to these conferences, but also society. These events must be open to the public; people need to know more about the industry to understand the importance of mining,” concluded Alva.
Alva believes there is much to do in the mining field. “The Government must secure investment to develop the mining industry. Investment goes beyond nationalism or preferences. It looks for a country financially attractive. Peruvian Andes have a great potential that we are not taking advantage of. However, there is no legislation on rational use of mineral resources,” stated Alva.
In respect of minerals, gold, copper, silver, tin, iron, zinc, and lead deposits are present in the Andes. Vulcanism and groundwater passing down through the subsoil explain the high concentration of mineral resources.
Perspective on current affairs
Luis Alva said, “Peru has the Andes, but does not have less bureaucratic processes and a legislation, quite different to what happens in other countries. The Government should find a solution to the political and social issues as to guarantee international investment.” The Chamber of Mines of Peru offers solutions to simplify formalities and promote the rational use of natural resources from the Andes.
