The distinguished ambassador and writer Edgardo de Habich y Palacio will be awarded the Medal of the Order of the Grand Officer of the Chamber of Mines of Peru for his long professional career and in favor of the culture of our country.
Academic Profile and tribute to Edgardo de Habich
De Habich, a graduate of the San Marcos University in Letters and Law, will receive his decoration at the Grand Theater of the UNI, where the II International Mining Congress GEOMET 2016 will be held from October 11 to 14. In this way, two of the country’s main universities will join forces to participate in this emotional tribute organized by the Chamber of Mines of Peru.
The ceremony is of special interest because Ambassador Edgardo de Habich’s grandfather, engineer Eduardo de Habich Mauersberger, was the founder and first rector of UNI. It was originally known (1869) as Special School of Civil Construction and Mining Engineers of Lima.
After receiving the medal, the ambassador will be given a guided tour of the university’s museum. The museum is named after his grandfather and houses art exhibits such as paintings, sculptures and archeological pieces.

Cesar Gallardo, assured that the Medal of the Order of the Grand Officer of the Chamber of Mines of Peru that will be delivered to Ambassador De Habich is recognition for the contribution he has made throughout his career. «This is a way of recognizing his extensive and prolific career always linked to culture and building values for a better society. It is a great honor for us to be able to award Ambassador De Habich,» said Eng. Gallardo.
This is the first time that the Chamber of Mines of Peru presents this award, designed to recognize illustrious personalities who have contributed with their life and work to cement the culture of our country and sustainable and responsible business activities.
Ambassador Edgardo de Habich y Palacio has shared literature with his profession for more than 50 years. He has published several short stories, novels, chronicles and even two of his plays won the National Theater Award. These were Eróstrato (1961) and “Menos grande que la Luna” (1963).
In 2005 he published his most recent work: the poetry book “El Azor Herido”. The following year he received the Casona Prize awarded by the Cultural Center of San Marcos University for his artistic and personal merits.
De Habich also served as a diplomat in Japan, Denmark, India, Bolivia and the former Soviet Union. After becoming ambassador, he represented Peru in Algeria, Cuba and Greece. He has received several decorations from the governments of Peru (Merit for Distinguished Services), Japan (the Sacred Treasure of the Dragon) and Denmark. In addition, from Greece (Grand Cross of Phoenix).
