Students and communities benefit from SR program

Our Social Responsibility area promotes mining for all and the sustainable development of the sector.

Students and communities benefit from SR program

Mining is a vital resource for economic and social development of Peru. To guarantee the future of this important activity, it must be carried out with a focus on social and environmental responsibility. Part of Social Responsibility (SR) program of the Chamber of Mines of Peru offers quality education to students and communities that will benefit from academic programs.

Likewise, hundreds of young students and graduates in professions related to the mining sector aspire to continue improving their education level in order to have the opportunity to occupy positions of greater importance in the labor market. However, they have to face the scarcity of resources, which blocks their professional growth.

Likewise, hundreds of young students and graduates in professions related to the mining sector aspire to continue improving their education level in order to have the opportunity to occupy positions of greater importance in the labor market. However, they have to face the scarcity of resources, which blocks their professional growth.

Cesar Gallardo Vela, Chief Executive Director of the Chamber of Mines of Peru, whose years of professional experience in different parts of Peru allow him to comment: “Working in different mining operations, I was able to witness the need of young professionals from national universities with fewer resources when I was working in different mining operations. These students and communities will benefit from training that will allow them to have access to better job opportunities”.

As mentioned above, the first axis of the RS social responsibility program of the Chamber of Mines is based on improving and expanding academic training opportunities for students and professors from lower-income backgrounds. To achieve this, it has been offering, for several years, a wide range of academic opportunities and leadership training.

Opportunities for underprivileged people

In 2012, the Training Program for Underprivileged Students of the National Universities of Peru was launched. Through this initiative, the most outstanding students from 13 national universities were trained and awarded training scholarships. Since then, this program has expanded and trained several promotions of students, generating a variety of courses, workshops, seminars and international events.

Continuing with this program, in 2015 the institution expanded the academic horizons of the students. Through the creation of the South Africa Scholarship Program, aimed at those who occupy the top positions in Peruvian universities and the most outstanding participants of the international master’s courses. The purpose of this scholarship is to broaden the students’ vision and provide them with greater possibilities of professional and employment success in the mining sector.

As a sign of the Chamber of Mines’ vocation for students and professors to have access to high quality knowledge; during June 24 and 25, 2016, it will organize the Free Seminar on Effective Strategies to Achieve Success in the Mining Business: Innovation and Creative Solutions. This Seminar will be held at the Congress of the Republic and is expected to gather more than 300 participants.

Working with communities

The other pillar of RS social responsibility program of the Chamber of Mines is focused on working with the communities near the mining activity areas. The program works on benefits for the inhabitants who face basic needs, such as the absence of water, electricity and sewage, which shows that even in the era of modernity and globalization in which we live, there are still places where progress has not arrived.

Mrs. Jessica Flores, a resident of one of the communities where she had social responsibility actions pointed out; “There is a lack of a properly equipped library so that the youngest have a place to study. In addition, the students of the communities must be benefited with these resources”.

Therefore, to help solve this problem, the Chamber of Mines of Peru is developing a pilot program. In order to improve the living conditions of the people living in these areas. The objective is that in the near future, the inhabitants will be able to produce their own sources of income. This pilot program is based on three basic aspects: good nutrition, improving health conditions and promoting art, culture and reading.

The results of this pilot program will be evaluated based on indicators. The purpose is to measure performance of the program for its subsequent application in other communities.

Finally, the Chamber of Mines of Peru has set itself the great objective of contributing to the transformation of the extractive industry and related activities. Likewise, it has an in-house strategy which consists in the human being the center of his purpose, which is to instill a mining industry that benefits everyone.
