The San Agustin University (UNSA) and our institution seek to work together

The Chamber of Mines of Peru organized a working group with the deans and other authorities of the UNSA of Arequipa; to whom it was proposed the creation of a joint work between companies, universities and state institutions for the benefit of the mining sector in Peru.

«This is an opportunity to establish and consolidate the links between companies, universities and the State in order to prioritize the development of mining at all levels. In this sense, this working group convened by the Chamber of Mines of Peru becomes an interesting initiative; as it seeks to promote parallel development of the technological aspect. It also seeks to promote capacity of the university to develop research work and studies. All with the objective of training professionals who work for the benefit of the entire population», stated Victor Ascuña Rivera, dean of the Faculty of Process Engineering of the UNSA.

Edgar Gonzalez Centeno, dean of the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Mines expressed the following. «It is really important that the institution shows a permanent willingness to work with universities such as UNSA. There are other entities that hold talks and congresses, but they are only aimed at representatives of the business sector. For this reason, this initiative is interesting because it is focused on optimizing the training of directors, teachers and students; through aspects such as innovation in knowledge», says Eng. Gonzalez.

Working group for the optimization of the mining activity

During this meeting, an analysis was made of the current situation regarding the training of students and proffesors in professions related to mining activity. This served to learn about the existing strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats, as well as probable solutions. «Our intention is to listen to the needs that arise in institutions such as UNSA, one of the most important in Arequipa. With this we will be able to develop an action plan and analyze the best way in which the Chamber of Mines of Peru can contribute to the optimization of aspects such as curriculum, infrastructure and improve access to internships of the students, said Eng. Cesar Gallardo Vela, chief executive officer of the institution.

The Chamber of Mines of Peru is becoming a pioneer institution in the organization of this type of events; since it summons university representatives from the provinces, they rarely have the opportunity to participate in this type of events.

«I highly value the interest shown by the Chamber of Mines of Peru in working hand in hand with the universities, as this will help to increase the level of future professionals in the extractive industry», said Dean Gonzalez Centeno.

Likewise, the members of the Board of Directors and Advisory Council of our institution expressed their willingness to develop a constant and joint work with the Peruvian universities, which was well received by the representatives from Arequipa.

A joint work with the universities

The association that the Chamber of Mines of Peru wants to establish with the different universities also seeks to promote the development of research work. The latter is considered a fundamental aspect to improve the profitability of the mining activity. «For us, training alone is not enough. It is also important to work on and develop research, innovation and creativity, since we live in a country and a world in constant change. Thus, the only way to successfully face the challenges posed by the current mining context is through the development of innovation strategies,» said Eng. Cesar Gallardo Vela.

In this regard, the dean of the Faculty of Process Engineering continued with his statements. «This type of work will be important to the extent that it allows us to promote the development of research projects among our students and teachers. This, for the benefit of the companies and the communities near the extraction area in the development of the operations».

At the end of this first meeting between the authorities from Arequipa and the representatives of our institution, the deans and authorities of the University of Arequipa expressed their satisfaction and gratitude. «I congratulate the Chamber of Mines of Peru for carrying out this type of initiative. For the first time institutions from the provinces of Peru, such as UNSA, are being taken into account», concluded Eng. Gonzalez.
