The President of the National University of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Cuzco (UNSAAC) stated, “Universities must provide help and proactively participate in the national economic development, not only as centers for education nationwide but also as suppliers of technical advice to population, companies and the State.”
Baltazar also declared, “it’s vital that universities express their informed opinion on mining activities to ensure compliance with the highest environmental standards and avoid misunderstandings.” “Our aim as a university is to supply technical advice through our professionals. We need to take advantage of our winning approval from people outside the capital to spread this message,” Baltazar concluded.
Interinstitutional Cooperation Agreement
Dr. Caceres emphasized the importance of the interinstitutional cooperation agreement signed between UNSAAC and The Chamber of Mines of Peru. He remarked, “There is an unlimited number of activities that universities can do along with The Chamber of Mines of Peru, for example, academic activities, keeping in mind that graduates will work in the country’s most important industries in the near future.”
The UNSAAC President also declared that national universities must provide help in developing good mining practices and participate in events such as GEOMET 2016, the 2nd International Congress on Mining. Dr. Baltazar Cáceres mentioned that GEOMET 2016 is to be held from 11 to 14 October at the Gran Teatro (Great Auditorium) from the National University of Engineering (UNI).
Lastly, Caceres pointed, “The GEOMET Congress is important due to the participation of academics, students and mining companies. It’s a virtuous circle that must perdure. Hence, these types of events are of benefit to the country.”
UNSAAC has branches in other Peruvian cities, as well as many schools. It is ranked the 4th oldest university in Peru and the 5th oldest in Latin America.
