César Gallardo Vela, CEO of The Chamber of Mines of Peru, was conferred a special award by the National University of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Cuzco (UNSAAC).
The “University Medal” is an award conferred uniquely upon businessmen, intellectuals and professionals contributing to the country development and the strength of academic and institutional bonds of said university.
Gallardo was conferred the award in a ceremony presided over Dr. Baltazar Cáceres Huambo, UNSAAC President, and attended by Dr. Carlos Franco Méndez, Dean of the Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Department.
At the ceremony were also present Dr. Milner Zegovia, Director of the Engineering Professional School; and Engineer Juan Francisco Meléndez Nina, Head of the Mining Engineering Academic Department, amongst other Deans and Professors.
Cáceres, UNSAAC President, stated that “It’s a great honor to confer this medal on César Gallardo for his work in promoting the benefits of clean and sustainable mining, which agrees with the community and seeks the country development, as well as for allowing our University to be a part of it.”

The CEO of The Chamber of Mines of Peru conveyed his gratitude for the distinction stating that it encourages further development of modern mining activities that will benefit Peruvians from high environmental standards. As Gallardo expressed, “It’s the only way to strengthen the economic take-off of our country in preparation to its bicentennial. For this to happen, universities contribution must be crucial.”
The ceremony was also attended by Mg. Josefina Escalante, Director of the Engineering Geology School, Engineer Percy Rueda Puelles, Director of UNSAAC’s International Technical Cooperation, Mg. Félix Arellano Choque, Director of the Mining Engineering Professional School, amongst others.
The Chamber of Mines of Peru, represented by the CEO César Gallardo, signed various interinstitutional cooperation agreements with those country’s leading universities that focus on the training of future mining specialists. For instance, San Carlos Private University in Puno, National University of the Altiplano, Jorge Basadre Grohmann National University (Tacna), as well as the National University of the Center of Peru (Huancayo), National University of Santa (Chimbote) and Micaela Bastidas National University (Apurimac).
Other similar agreements were signed with the Abat Oliba University and Universidade de Vigo, both located in Spain, as well as with the Bolivian Technological University and the Technological and Pedagogical University of Colombia. The Chamber of Mines of Peru made an agreement with the Peruvian Congress to host and promote activities leading to a clean, modern and global mining in favor of all Peruvians.
