Participants from over 15 countries attended the II GEOMET Congress in the Gran Teatro of the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería. Following the event, the foreign delegation had the opportunity to visit the university’s museums free of charge.
One of these is the Museum of Arts and Sciences “Ingeniero Eduardo de Habich”. Others include, the Museum of Mineralogy of the Faculty of Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (FIGMM), and the Museum of Paleontology.
Pieces of great historical importance
Inaugurated to commemorate the 140 years of UNI, the Museum of Arts and Sciences has an area 350 m2. Its exhibitions house a varied collection of paintings and sculptures valuable for Peruvian art history. Among them are paintings by José Sabogal and Pancho Fierro.
The space is dedicated to the Polish engineer and mathematician, Eduardo de Habich. He was the founder and first dean of UNI. More importantly, he made possible the adaptation to the decimal metric system in the country. The instruments used to this end are present in the exhibition. Among the other exhibitions are archaeological pieces from the Vicus, Chancay and Inca cultures.
For its part, the Mineralogy Museum of the Faculty of Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (FIGMM), presents a sample approximately 6 thousand minerals. The most outstanding is a 330.85 gr native gold rock gifted by the Venezuelan engineer Guillermo Machado. The collection is the result of many years of work by lecturers, students, and graduates of the faculty.
Lastly but not least, the Museum of Paleontology shows a classification of numerous fossil samples. Among its main attractions, the entire remains of a whale, besides a megaterium and a dolphin.
Art and mining hand in hand
The GEOMET 2016 delegation thanked the initiative of CMP Executive Director, Eng. César Gallardo Vela. As they had the opportunity to visit the museums and learn a little more about the cultural variety of Peru. “We want to show that art and mining can go hand in hand. What better way to do it than to allow our foreign brothers to learn more about our rich history and multiculturalism” commented Eng. Gallardo.
The event organized by the CMP brought together representatives from Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Ecuador, Angola, among other nationalities.
