Engineer César Gallardo Vela, president of The Chamber of Mines of Peru, met with Julio Luna Pérez, the district mayor of Madre de Dios. The purpose of the meeting was to address important mining issues such as the mining formalization process in the region.
The district of Laberinto, jurisdiction of Luna Pérez, was created on September 07, 1994. It is located in the department of Madre de Dios, in the central part of the Tambopata Province, on the banks of the Madre de Dios River.
“It is important to be able to exchange proposals on how we can make mining, not only in Madre de Dios, but throughout Peru, become a responsible activity with the environment and the community in order to achieve the economic development that the country needs. The Chamber of Mines of Peru is in constant search of new strategic partners on behalf of the extractive sector; therefore, this meeting is of utmost importance to learn about the problems of the Laberinto district. In this way, a joint work plan will be created to benefit those involved in the mining sector,” said Engineer César Gallardo Vela.
The mining problem in Madre de Dios
“We have a serious problem with the mining formalization process; since, due to certain supreme decrees, to this day we do not have any miners within the program. I am convinced that a new mining law should be enacted, providing for articles that are in line with the reality of the mining activity in Madre de Dios,” said Mayor Luna Pérez.
“Mining in our region has been demonized on the grounds that all mining activity is harmful to the environment. Illegal mining takes place in the area known as ‘La Pampa,’ but in the area implemented by the Regional Government known as the ‘Mining Corridor’ responsible extractive activity is carried out. These exploitations have the standards imposed by the relevant authorities. Likewise, I consider that the participation of The Chamber of Mines of Peru is very important to achieve a responsible mining activity; through constant training by the international experts in the institution,” concluded the district mayor of Madre de Dios.
